How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Vehicle?

2022 Hummer EV

How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle? If you’ve ever asked this question, you’re not alone, as many New Orleans drivers contemplating a new EV have similar inquiries. However, electric car charging time isn’t universal across the board — multiple dynamics come into play. Electric vehicle charging depends on the specific type of EV, the plugs and ports, the battery, the charger, and multiple other factors.

EVs contain different types of battery power that require different charging times. The wide variety of various types of charges makes it difficult to provide an umbrella answer for all EVs. Regardless, there’s still a lot to learn about the three primary varieties of EV charging: domestic, rapid domestic, and public charging. Each of these three charging stations will determine how long your electric car charging time requires.

Electric Car Charging Time Options

  1. Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): This is a normal three-prong 110V/120V outlet known as Level 1 Charging. It’s not particularly fast, but it’s good to use if you need to top off some of the energy the vehicle dispensed during your commute to work in Metairie. Normally this type of charging takes 24 hours or more.
  2. Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: A professional installs this Level 2 Charging method. This method uses 240V+ rapid chargers made specifically for your vehicle brand. These installations are much faster than the normal household grounded outlet and usually take hours instead of days. Fast chargers are also typically AC instead of DC and can obtain an 80% charge in as little as 30-minutes. The additional 20% will take longer because speed diminishes as the battery reaches its peak.
  3. Public Charging: Charging on the go in Metairie is possible in places like malls, parking garages, apartments, and hotels, thanks to public charging stations. You’ll likely find these stations at brand-name retail outlets like Walmart, Target, and Kohls. New chargers are being erected in new places daily and even offer emissions-free options that use wind turbines and solar panels.

Domestic Electric Vehicle Charging Time

Charging times vary depending on whether you use Level 1 or Level 2 charging stations. The average times are as follows:

  • Level 1 EV charging takes days to charge an EV fully.
  • Level 2 EV charging takes hours to charge an EV fully. Normally, a full overnight session will fully power the EV’s battery.
  • Level 3 EV charging will power most EVs in about 30 to 45-minutes and add a substantial amount of range in only ten minutes.

Depending on your time constraints, one of these methods suits Covington drivers better than the others. The most widely-used method is a mix between Level 1 and Level 2 charging while close to home and the use of rapid charging during long-distance trips.

Public Electric Car Charging Time

Home chargers typically provide 3.7 kW or 7 kW of power in comparison to 22 kW, 43-50, and 150kW rapid charging at public stations. If you’re charging the appropriate vehicle, it’s possible to obtain a full charge in about an hour. This is assuming you’re going from zero to 100%. However, other vehicles can take upwards of 4 to 6 hours to obtain a full battery.
